- Recent research suggests that Dyslexia may occur in as many as 5-10% of students
- ADHD is one of the most common chronic disorders of childhood, occurring in as many as 3-5% of school-age children
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most common cause of death and disability in young individuals.
Learning and behavioral difficulties in childhood are very common. These difficulties can have a significant impact on the development of social skills, academics, and independence. Misdiagnosis can lead to serious complications and/or cause additional concerns, such as depression or anxiety. Many times even with an accurate diagnosis, medications are not enough to treat the presenting problem.
A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation from a competent, fellowship-trained pediatric neuropsychologist is essential for children and adolescents struggling in school. Such an evaluation measures the child’s current level of functioning which is essential in identifying an accurate diagnosis, prescribing effective treatment, and developing a successful education program.
WHAT IS PEDIATRIC NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?Pediatric neuropsychology is a professional specialty concerned with learning and behavior in the developing child. Evaluations are conducted with children who have suspected learning, behavioral, or emotional difficulties. Through formal testing of abilities such as memory and language skills, our pediatric neuropsychologist is able to measure brain functioning. The assessment typically involves a clinical interview, paper/pencil tests, computer administered tasks, and behavioral rating forms filled out by parents and teachers. The results of the evaluation are used to accurately identify the problem and prescribe successful treatment. The neuropsychologist works closely with parents and teachers to evaluate the child’s progress to make sure that the specialized treatment plan that is created, will lead to the best results.
